What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition that is characterized by the inflammation and narrowing of the airways. This can make it difficult to breathe and also lead to:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Difficulty sleeping

The severity of this condition can vary from one person to another, ranging from minor inconveniences to life-threatening attacks. Some people experience asthma symptoms only in certain circumstances, such as when they are exercising, sick, stressed, or exposed to cold air, allergens, or other irritants.

How Is Asthma Diagnosed?

In addition to reviewing a patient’s medical history and symptoms and completing a physical examination, a practitioner may need to perform pulmonary function tests to confirm an asthma diagnosis. For example, the provider might conduct a spirometry test to measure how much air the patient can inhale and exhale, as well as how fast they can empty their lungs. During this test, the patient will inhale as much air as possible, then quickly blow the air into a tube connected to a machine (a spirometer).

At West Coast Pulmonary & Sleep Disorders Center, we are able to perform tests like these to diagnose and treat patients right in our clinic. And because allergens can sometimes trigger asthma attacks, we can also conduct allergy testing. If needed, imaging can be set up to your convenience.

How Is Asthma Treated?

Asthma management has developed in the past decade and now allows patients even with severe asthma to live normal lives. Asthma treatment options include:

  • Using an inhaler (some inhalers are used on a regular basis, while others are used only during asthma attacks)
  • Taking oral medication
  • Biologics
  • Avoiding asthma triggers
  • Making certain lifestyle changes, such as minimizing dust and mold exposure and using an air conditioner and dehumidifier

A pulmonologist will be able to recommend the best asthma treatment for your specific needs.
