What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome (also referred to as Willis-Ekbom disease) causes an unpleasant sensation in the legs or feet (or less commonly, the arms), which in turn makes someone feel like they need to move those limbs around. This urge typically develops while sitting or lying down at night or for an extended period of time, and is often described as an aching, crawling, itching, pulling, throbbing, or tingling sensation that makes it difficult to sleep. Moving the limbs can relieve this feeling, but only temporarily. Symptoms of restless leg syndrome can disappear and then reappear later on, and generally worsen during pregnancy and with age.

What Causes Restless Leg Syndrome?

Researchers are still working to determine the exact cause of restless leg syndrome, although studies suggest it may be related to an imbalance of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps control movement. In some cases, restless leg syndrome can be inherited, and it may also be associated with conditions such as:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Kidney failure
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Spinal lesions

How to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome

drowsiness and depression. Restless leg syndrome treatment often involves:

  • Addressing any underlying conditions
  • Taking medication
