PULMONARY TESTS

Lung Function

A pulmonary function test (PFT) is designed to evaluate how well the lungs work. It measures how much air the lungs can hold, how quickly air moves into and out of the lungs, how well the lungs move oxygen into the blood, and how easily the lungs move carbon dioxide out of the blood. PFTs determine if a patient has a restrictive or obstructive lung condition and can provide a baseline for comparison if a patient’s condition improves or deteriorates in the future.

PULMONARY TESTS

Spirometry

The most common type of pulmonary function test, spirometry measures how much and how quickly air moves out of the lungs. During the test, a patient will breathe into a mouthpiece that is attached to a small electronic machine. They will be instructed to take in a deep breath and then blow it out as hard and fast as possible; this exercise is repeated a few times for best results.

PULMONARY TESTS

NIOX VERO ®

NIOX VERO® is a revolutionary machine that assesses airway inflammation for patients with asthma and related conditions. It measures the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) by evaluating the air that is slowly exhaled out of the lungs. NIOX VERO ® determines how well a patient with asthma will respond to corticosteroids so that our clinicians can develop appropriate treatment plans. It can also uncover other causes for respiratory symptoms when asthma is not the diagnosis.

PULMONARY TESTS

6-Minute Walk Test

The six-minute walk test measures an individual’s aerobic exercise capabilities, and is commonly used to evaluate the lung capacity for people with pulmonary hypertension, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and other conditions. During this test, a patient will walk at their normal pace for six minutes with the goal of walking as far as possible during that time. During the test, the patient should report any chest pain or breathing difficulties they experience and will be encouraged to take breaks as needed.
