Sleep Disturbances and Disorders

What Is Sleep Medicine?

Sleep medicine is a medical subspecialty devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disturbances and disorders, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, abnormal sleep, and excessive sleep. These conditions are widespread and can significantly affect an individual’s health—emotionally, mentally, and physically. At West Coast Pulmonary & Sleep Disorders Center, our sleep medicine specialists are board certified in this specialty. What’s more, our sleep center is accredited by the American Commission for Health Care Services, which demonstrates our commitment to high-quality, patient-centric care.

Common Disorders

Insomnia
NARCOLEPSY
Sleep Apnea
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
Periodic Limb Movements (PLM)

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can be characterized as transient (lasting for several days), intermittent (occurs from time to time, with each time lasting less than two weeks), and chronic (lasting for longer than a month). If you have insomnia, you may have difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep; some people wake up frequently throughout the night while others wake up too early and can’t fall back asleep. Common treatments for insomnia include cognitive behavioral therapy and prescription medication.

NARCOLEPSY

Narcolepsy is usually described as excessive daytime sleepiness. It can begin at any age and is believed to be hereditary. Symptoms of narcolepsy include sleep attacks (falling asleep without warning), cataplexy (sudden loss of voluntary muscle control), and sleep paralysis (a brief inability to move or speak while falling asleep or upon waking). Narcolepsy does not have a cure, but lifestyle modifications and medications can help patients manage their symptoms.

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) affects more than 20 million Americans, making it the most common sleep disorder. It is caused by a functional obstruction of the upper airway, which results in pauses in breathing (apneas) and disruption of sleep (arousals). OSAS can be a life-threatening condition and treatment typically involves the use of a positive airway pressure machine that delivers air pressure through the nose using a mouthpiece that is placed over the nose and mouth.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which a person has a frantic need to move their legs. Typically, they feel an unpleasant sensation that causes this urge, which has been described as crawling, creeping, tingling, throbbing, or aching. RLS causes disruptions in a person’s sleep, making it difficult to fall or stay asleep. It can be managed with medication and lifestyle modifications.

Periodic Limb Movements (PLM)

Periodic limb movements in sleep are repetitive movements that occur every 20-40 seconds. Typically occurring in the lower limbs, the movements may be brief muscle twitches, jerking motions, or an upward flexing of the feet. PLM can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours and can disrupt one’s sleep—and their partner’s sleep—significantly. PLM is most commonly treated with medication.
